About Blue Bird
Blue Bird Horticulture is an owner-operated company built on professional horticultural training and thoughtful landscape construction. Every project is carefully overseen from start to finish, ensuring plant care, design, and building decisions are made with intention and long-term success in mind.

The inspiration behind Blue Bird came during a project near Ancaster, when a blue indigo bunting landed briefly in newly planted lilacs — a quiet reminder that gardens aren't just human spaces, they are habitats. That moment helped shape the company’s approach: creating landscapes that are not only visually compelling, but that also support local ecosystems and thrive over time.

Alan Ważny
Owner / Horticulturalist
Born in Hamilton, Alan is a lifelong green thumb who began his career in urban planning. He studied at Mohawk College and Ryerson University before working as a draftsman for land surveying and engineering firms. Known for always growing plants at his desk, Alan later moved to Montréal, where he worked with the City reviewing heritage renovation permits in the historic Plateau and Mile End. Working closely with historic façades sparked a deeper interest in the integration of gardens and architectural design.

Driven to work more directly with living landscapes, Alan pursued formal training at the Horticultural Training Centre in Laval, Québec. There, he developed a strong foundation in botany, plant care, soil composition, and ecological practices, along with specialized training in green roof design, pollinator and bird gardens, and native species conservation. In addition to earning a diploma in horticulture, Alan completed a second diploma in landscape construction, gaining expertise in hardscaping and natural stone work, irrigation systems, and exterior carpentry. His work is guided by a thoughtful understanding of how healthy landscapes grow, function, and thrive over time.
